Places to eat and drink in Braunton

When on holiday in Braunton, one thing’s for sure- you certainly won’t be going hungry! The streets are lined with fish and chip shops, restaurants, bars and cafés, all serving up delicious food and drinks to eat in and takeaway. Whether you fancy getting dressed up and sipping a cocktail or two or grabbing some dinner straight from the beach, there is somewhere for every occasion.

Squires Fish and Chips

One of Braunton’s hot spots and most renowned eateries is Squires Fish and Chips. The award-winning restaurant has had a handful of famous diners, all of whom have had only fantastic things to say after enjoying their meals. As well as the obvious fish, chips and mushy peas, Squires serves up a range of fish dishes, burgers and vegetarian meals. Don’t be put off by the queues, the wait is never too long and is always worth it! If you fancy fish and chips on the go, swing by their takeaway shop next door (you can pre-order on the app), and take your goodies home or to a nearby beauty spot for an al fresco dinner.

South 16

Another award-winning fish and chip shop, South 16 sits on South Street and serves up sustainably resourced fish in a variety of dishes, alongside a mouth-watering range of burgers, pizzas, pies, and more. Their tasty chips are cut from local potatoes grown in Braunton’s historic Great Field, which you can enjoy in the restaurant or as a takeaway.

SQ Bar and Restaurant

Head to SQ Bar and Restaurant for a fun-filled evening full of cocktails and good food. The vibrant interior and buzzing atmosphere draws both locals and holidaymakers inside, as does the great menu which serves up British cuisine and fine wines. Owned by the Squires family, SQ has a lovely range of fresh fish dishes in addition to great sharing platters, curries, and family favourites such as warming mac and cheese. If the sun is shining, make your way upstairs and find a spot on the fab roof terrace, a great place to soak up some sun and relax above the bustling streets below with a signature Maverick Martini in hand. Open from breakfast through to dinner, head in for a quick bite to eat as you are passing by or book a table for dinner.

Hangloose

Having moved from Croyde, Hangloose combines the must have qualities of a Devon pub with the energy and buzz of a bar. Located in the centre of Braunton this restaurant is the perfect people watching spot as you enjoy the high quality food the kitchen has to offer. To start your morning off properly you must have their full English breakfast and when Sunday comes around you do not want to miss out of the food available at Hangloose. Enjoy a range of tapas style side plates or tuck into any of their flavoursome main courses. The food is not the only reason to visit, a depth of cocktails are available here thanks to their mixologist owners who can rustle up any of your requests.

Heartbreak Hotel

Those with a sweet tooth must absolutely visit Heartbreak Hotel for one of their homemade doughnuts. Play it safe and stick to a traditional sweet treat oozing with fresh jam or try one of their more unusual flavours. Doughnuts are served at weekends along with an array of other sublime treats, both sweet and savoury which are served on weekdays too. Heartbreak’s coffee is up there with the best, made obvious by the cluster of customers outside with hot drinks in their hands and smiles on their faces! The service is great, the branding is quirky and cool, and the family-run business is environmentally friendly. Cups, lids and straws are plastic-free, and produce is local and organic, in case you needed a reason other than their doughnuts to visit!

Siam Bistro

Brimming with atmosphere and flavour, the Siam Bistro is a small, vibrant restaurant serving authentic Thai food. This family-run business has an extensive traditional Thai menu and offers takeaway and lunch time deals so you can enjoy their delicious food at any time of the day. The staff are lovely and helpful and are more than happy to make recommendations if you simply can’t choose between dishes- wait until you see the menu!
