Combe Martin is a pretty fishing village tucked away down a steep wooded valley on the North Devon coast. The secluded harbour neatly contains a lovely sandy beach, which is exposed at low tide and is very popular with young families. At high tide, the harbour provides a safe haven to what remains of a few fishing boats and some local pleasure craft. The cliffs either side of Combe Martin are impressive and are in fact the highest in the UK and somewhat macabrely named Little and Great Hangman and rise 700 feet above sea level. You can walk for miles beyond the village on the South West Coastal Path that joins all the coastal resorts along the North Devon coastline.
The village itself boasts the longest high street in the UK and it twists and turns for two miles up the valley. The locals also claim the village has the highest number of pubs but that’s never been confirmed. There are plenty of good places to eat and drink and just outside the village is the Combe Martin Dinosaur and Wildlife Park, which houses a host of moulded dinosaurs that will let out a mighty roar when you least expect it, there are also many exotic animals and birds to watch. It’s only a 10-minute drive to the lively resorts of Woolacombe, Croyde and Ilfracombe where the beaches are some of the best in Britain.
